Small furniture loads between Melbourne and Tasmania
Send a single piece, selected furniture or a small household load across Bass Strait. Plan the inventory, collection and receiving details for either direction.

A few pieces of furniture can still need a proper moving plan
You might have a chair bought in Melbourne, a bedroom’s furniture heading to Hobart or a few family pieces going from Tasmania to a Melbourne home. The load is modest, but someone still needs to collect it, protect it for transport and get it into the right room.
Tas Removals & Storage can help with small furniture loads between Melbourne and Tasmania. Send the actual item list, collection and delivery suburbs, access details and dates. We can quote for the furniture transport you need and discuss whether a suitable shared-load or backloading option is available.
This guide is for selected furniture, packed cartons and smaller household loads crossing Bass Strait in either direction. For a compact move within Tasmania, see our small-load removalists in Tasmania. A single item can be worth an enquiry; its size, handling and the route still need checking.
Give the two ends of the journey equal attention
“Pickup in Melbourne, delivery in Tasmania” is a start. Add the suburbs and postcodes, the people available at each end, and whether there are stairs, lifts or difficult truck access. If the delivery address is still undecided, say so before a direct delivery is quoted.
Which way is your small load travelling?
Melbourne to Tasmania
List the Melbourne collection suburb and actual Tasmanian destination, whether that is Hobart, Launceston, Devonport or another location. Mention a dealer, private seller or family contact at pickup. Our Melbourne to Tasmania removalists page covers the wider incoming household service.
Tasmania to Melbourne
Provide the Tasmanian collection address and Melbourne receiving suburb, postcode and contact. Explain any seller release, storage collection or building booking. For a larger outbound relocation, use our moving from Tasmania to mainland Australia guide.
A purchased or family item
Send photos and dimensions, who owns the piece and who has authority to release it. A marketplace purchase, inherited cabinet or furniture going to a relative needs a collection contact and a clear receiving plan, even when you are not attending yourself.
Tell us if the move includes another collection or delivery address. Each stop changes the journey. The multiple-address furniture removals guide helps you put the right belongings against each stop and identify who will be there.
Describe the load by its contents
A small apartment can contain a large sofa, a heavy fridge and many cartons; a few selected pieces from a bigger house may take less space. Work from an item list rather than the size of the property. Include everything you want quoted, with a count for matching pieces and cartons.
Swipe across the table to read every column. Keyboard users can focus the table and use the arrow keys.
| What is moving? | What to send | What to flag |
|---|---|---|
| A couch or armchair | Overall dimensions, upholstery and photos of the whole piece. | Fixed backs, removable legs, stairs and narrow hallway turns. |
| A bed or bedroom furniture | Mattress size, base design, drawers and separate furniture pieces. | Permitted dismantling, loose hardware and any reassembly requested. |
| A dining setting or cabinet | Table dimensions, chair count, glass panels and loose shelves. | Fragile surfaces, existing damage and protection needed. |
| A fridge or washing machine | Make or model, external dimensions and collection access. | Manufacturer’s preparation instructions and disconnection responsibilities. |
| Packed cartons | Number, approximate dimensions and a brief contents description. | Heavy books, breakables, liquids or anything needing acceptance checks. |
Measure the dimensions in which the furniture will actually travel. If a table is going with its legs removed, identify the top and separate legs in the list. Use our furniture measurement and doorway guide to record bulky pieces and the route.
If you are asked for cubic metres, dimensions in metres help. For example, one carton measuring 0.5 × 0.4 × 0.4 metres has an external volume of 0.08 m³; ten identical cartons total 0.8 m³. That arithmetic describes the cartons only. Furniture shape, protection and loading space still need to be allowed for by the team.
Keep the small load easy to identify and handle
Number the cartons and keep a list connecting each number with its contents. Identify which furniture and cartons belong to this booking, particularly if other belongings are staying at the collection home. Our carton labelling and inventory tips can help keep the list usable at delivery.
Pack breakables with suitable protection, seal cartons and keep heavy contents in manageable boxes. Photograph existing marks on furniture before collection. Ask what wrapping, moving blankets or packing materials the quote includes, and name unusually delicate items before booking.
Empty furniture compartments and gather loose shelves, fittings and permitted detachable parts. Agree who will dismantle or reassemble furniture. For appliances, follow the manufacturer’s moving instructions and settle disconnection or trade work separately. A short inventory does not make an unfamiliar heavy item a safe DIY lift.
For goods entering Tasmania, use Biosecurity Tasmania’s moving guidance. Personal effects should be free of soil, seeds and other biosecurity matter; check restricted contents and the declaration process for a permanent relocation. Tell the team about outdoor furniture, garden equipment or anything that needs a specific entry check.
For the opposite journey, check Agriculture Victoria’s household plant and related-item requirements if plants, soil or regulated materials are involved. Identify those items separately and ask whether they can be accepted. Tasmania entry instructions apply to goods coming into Tasmania.

Make your available dates useful
A small interstate load may suit available space on a planned service. Whether it can be included depends on the inventory, route, handling and dates. Ask what options can be quoted for your job; a backload is not automatically available or always the cheapest complete solution.
Give the earliest date the items will be ready, the last date the collection property is available and any genuine delivery deadline. If a seller is only home at certain times, include that too. Our Tasmania backloading date flexibility guide explains how to describe a date range that works at both ends.
Ask for the proposed collection and delivery windows, how notice will be provided and who needs to attend. Bass Strait transport and the final delivery form part of the booking. Your own flight or passenger ferry arrival does not set the furniture’s delivery time.
If you are buying the furniture, confirm the purchase and release arrangements with the seller. Have the seller agree to the collection method, share a reachable phone number and avoid promising a pickup slot until the team confirms it. Tell us before adding a second purchased item or another stop.
Prepare the receiver, even for one item
Give the receiving contact the item list and tell the team who has authority to accept delivery. Arrange keys, apartment lift access and any building moving hours. Describe the route into the intended room, not just the street address.
Check whether the quoted delivery is into the room, and whether any agreed reassembly or placement is included. A couch collected from a ground-floor garage may need different handling at a second-floor apartment. Provide delivery access photos before the transport is booked.
If the receiving home will not be ready, request a storage option before collection. Our moving to Tasmania before you have a permanent address guide helps with first-week essentials, a storage interval and later delivery. Confirm where storage would be, access conditions, handling and the redelivery cost for your destination.
Ask what cover applies to the booked work and whether you need any separate insurance. Moneysmart’s contents insurance guide explains policy limits and exclusions. Ask your insurer about the actual transport and storage circumstances, alongside the removalist’s terms.
What belongs in a small-load transport quote?
Check the collection, interstate transport and delivery together. The cost can depend on item volume, handling, both addresses, access, dates, packing, additional stops and storage. Ask about any minimum charge and what happens if the inventory or destination changes.
Compare offers for the same items, access and tasks. A price for transport alone may leave collection, delivery or extra handling to organise. The ACCC’s guidance on contract terms is useful when checking the written booking and anything you need explained.
A small-load enquiry you can copy
Direction: Melbourne to Tasmania, or Tasmania to Melbourne.
Items: furniture list, dimensions, carton count and photos.
Collection: suburb, postcode, access, contact and release instructions.
Delivery: suburb, postcode, access, receiver and room placement requested.
Dates: ready date, latest collection, delivery deadline and genuine flexibility.

Questions about small furniture loads between Melbourne and Tasmania
Can I enquire about one furniture item between Melbourne and Tasmania?
Yes, send the item dimensions and photos, both suburbs and postcodes, access and dates. Identify who can release it and who will receive it. Tas Removals & Storage can quote for the requested collection and delivery and confirm whether a suitable booking is available.
What counts as a small furniture load?
It may be one piece, a few large items, bedroom furniture or selected furniture with cartons. There is no universal cubic-metre cutoff used in this guide. List the actual contents, dimensions and handling needs so the team can plan and price the load.
How much does a Melbourne–Tasmania small load cost?
The quote depends on the inventory, collection and delivery addresses, access, dates and requested tasks. Check collection, interstate transport, delivery, protection and any storage together. Ask about minimum charges and how added items, another stop or a changed destination would be priced.
Is a small load automatically booked as a backload?
No. Ask whether suitable shared-load or backloading space is available for the route, items and dates. Give your genuine collection and receiving flexibility. Compare the complete quoted work and timing rather than assuming every small job receives a backloading price.
Can furniture be collected from a Melbourne seller or Tasmanian family member?
Provide their permission, name, phone number, exact address, access and available times. For a purchase, complete the release arrangements with the seller. Have the team confirm a suitable collection plan before promising a pickup slot, and identify the receiving contact too.
How long does a small furniture load take across Bass Strait?
Ask for the proposed collection and delivery windows for your booking. Collection access, available transport connections, handling and the final address affect the plan. Tell the team about any firm deadline. Your own flight or ferry arrival does not set the furniture delivery date.
Are packing and furniture dismantling included?
Check the written quote. Name the protection, carton packing, permitted dismantling, reassembly and placement you want. Supply manufacturer instructions for appliances or unfamiliar mechanisms. Materials, trade work and extra tasks need their own agreement; a small load does not make them automatic inclusions.
Can the furniture be stored if the destination is not ready?
Request storage before collection and explain the expected gap and later destination. Confirm the actual storage location, charging period, handling, access and redelivery costs. If the final home is still undecided, give the intended area and have the later delivery details confirmed once it is known.
